Wedding Speech Magic – 14 Great Tips from a Pro

$

Today we’re joined by Wedding Celebrant and Speech Coach Janie Lazar! Janie is a pro when it comes to nailing your wedding speech, providing professional speech coaching on a one to one basis. She also runs group coaching where anyone from the Best Man or Groom to the Father of the Bride can learn how to craft their speech and how to deliver it on the day. Today she’s sharing some great tips to help you get started. Over to Janie…

Fast forward. It’s your wedding day. You stand up. Look out across the room, your heart begins to race.  Your mouth goes dry. Your mind goes blank. There’s nothing more terrifying than standing up in front of a room of people you know, all waiting for you to start. Will it be short, long, entertaining? Will the words make sense? Will they tumble out as you want them to? Will they be what you and your partner want to hear? Speech making on such an important occasion can be stressful, daunting and yes, exhilarating too – it just takes a little work!

Weddings are days full of emotion. Filled with moments that will touch everyone you’ve invited. Somehow when the speeches begin, time really does stop as our hearts open wide to share thoughts and feelings all too often rarely voiced. People care and want only the best, only joy, love and laughter for the couple whose day is being celebrated; they may not remember everything that is said but will always remember how they felt as heartfelt words wrapped themselves around friends and family.

Speeches can be emotional rollercoasters. They have the power to play with us, offering simultaneous moments of joy and sadness, especially for a parent who now fully realises from this day on, their son or daughter’s own journey of a lifetime has really begun. So how to create that Wedding Speech Magic? How do you go from ‘Page to Stage’?

It’s easy to say speak from the heart – but that is the starting point and here are a few general top tips to think about before speech writing and delivery itself.

1. Start with the end in mind – by this consider what you want to say in the time you have to speak. What can you talk about that will be of interest to everyone and be memorable for all the right reasons!

2. Speak Succinctly – every word, every sentence has to earn its place and less really is more. Maybe your emotions will take over and you’ll go off at a tangent and that’s ok as long as you don’t waffle. It’s a big day after all. There’s merit in sticking to the key points and making each word matter – and be heard – there’s nothing more irritating than not being able to hear someone or listening to someone d r o n e  o n ! Save cracking jokes that only a select few will ‘get’ for the party afterwards.

3. See your speech as having a conversation – a speech is just a conversation – with everyone. A great speech makes everyone feel included.

4. Every speech needs structure – no matter how short it is structure is essential and three key points interwoven between a strong opening and close usually works well.

5. How you speak – the three P’s, the pitch of your voice, is it too high in places or too low, is the pace too fast or slow, have you given yourself and your audience time to hear by using pauses in the right place.  Considered use of Pitch, Pace and Pause will impact speech delivery.

6. How your body ‘talks’ – bringing your speech to life with gestures, facially and physically

7. Congruency – quite possibly the most important point. When your voice and body work together, this is when your words come to life appropriately and really connect you with your audience who will be willing you to do well as they hang on every word! V

8. Video and/or record yourself – the more you get to know your speech, the easier it will come out on the day. It’s better not to learn it word for word because if you ‘get a blank’ and ‘go off script’ it can be hard to recall what comes next. You only need to know the key points so you can recall them from personal memory. Remember, no-one but you will know what you’ve left out or forgotten, so knowing the key points and how to link them together will keep you on track. Recording it on your phone is a good way to really ‘hear’ what works and where to make changes. The trick is to stay calm!

A Few Practical Tips For the Day Itself

1. Hydrate well. Drink plenty of water before you speak and make sure there is a bottle or glass of water close at hand. Sip water slowly before you speak and regulate your breathing. Make time to do some simple vocal exercises on your way to the wedding, or if you can vocalise/practice your speech in the room before everyone arrives.

2. Stand Tall – when you stand, take a moment to settle yourself, spread the weight evenly on your feet, it’ll help you feel grounded and more prepared.

3. Breathe and Smile – Before you begin, look out across the room, smile and make eye contact with a few people and breathe. This is a vital part of ‘relaxing into your speech’ and will bring everyone’s attention to you.

4. Prompt Cards – can be useful with a few key words on each and are easier to handle rather than rustling sheets of paper. Even if you don’t use the prompt cards, it’s reassuring to know you have them.

5. Look out not down – sound travels in the direction you hold your head, so if you’re looking down at notes, down is where your voice will go. If using notes, raise them up.

6. Using a microphone means you can talk normally – familiarise yourself with its range with a practice run beforehand. This will help you relax and you won’t need to worry about being able to project your voice so everyone can hear.

Finally, really great speeches come from the heart. We listen with our ears and our eyes and speeches really are much more than words.

P.S. Looking to perfect your speech with a pro? Janie is running a Wedding Speech Workshop on March 10th. Find out more here!

There’s a couple of topics that are always hotly debated in our forums and kids at weddings and favours are definitely two of the most popular! While some couples love the idea of having a little token for their guests, others would rather spend the money elsewhere. If you’re in the pro-favours camp and are looking for some ideas your guests will be a fan of, we’ve rounded up some of the most popular choices below. From scratch cards and edible goodies to treats like ice creams they can devour there and then, these 10 ideas are sure to be a big hit with guests (and won’t be left behind at the end of the night!)…

1. Donate to a Chosen Charity

If you’re not pushed on having something for your guests but would like to do something, one idea that’s proving really popular and goes to a worthy cause is charity wedding favours! There are some great charities out there working to make a difference and lots of them can provide you with tent cards for your tables so that your guests know you’re using your happy occasion to help this great cause. Two such charities are Make a Wish Ireland and Self Help AfricaMake-A-Wish Ireland is a children’s charity that helps grant wishes and give children with a life-threatening condition a magical day they will remember. Self Help Africa uses your donations to support and invest in projects that can help improve the lives of some of Africa’s poorest people. For more info on charity wedding favours, click here!

2. Treat them to Drinks they Can Enjoy Post Ceremony (or Sachets They Can Take Home)

Photo by Freestone Photography via Wedding Chicks

Hands down one of the most popular favours at weddings has to be of the food and drink variety! Guests defo won’t forget to munch on some sweets or take a hot choc or coffee favour with them (you can make up everything from hot chocolate kits to little sachets with fresh tea leaves or coffee beans). If you’re a bit of a coffee connoisseur, another cute idea is to have a mobile coffee bar like Bean & Gone pop by after the ceremony to treat your guests to lattes and cappuccinos so they’ve something lovely to sip on as they head on to the reception. Find out more about Bean & Gone here!

3. Surprise them with Some Scratch Cards

If you’re keen to have something small on the tables guests can enjoy, scratch cards are a genius idea. Guests can have a bit of fun seeing if they got lucky and it will create a bit of a buzz from the get to. Or if you’re looking to get everyone involved, you can have a bit of a lottery with prizes such as the first scoop from the candy buffet, a free drink or other little treats like a bottle of bubbly.

4. Wow them with Delish Take Home Goodies

Photo by This & That Photography | Photo by Kim J Martin Photography via Heart Love Always | Photo via The Carrot Cake Lady

From fudge and macarons to cookies, cupcakes and carrot cake, the options are endless when it comes to edible favours! If you’re brill at baking (or your parents or family members love a good bake off) – use your talents to whip up a batch of tasty and personal favours guests can enjoy there and then or the morning after with a cuppa. Or if enlist the help of The Carrot Cake Lady who makes the most delicious, moist, light carrot cake in a jar – it comes with its own little wooden spoon attached and personalised sticker so guests can easily take it home! Find out more here.

If you’re not the best baker but love the idea of having something foodie, other fun ideas include crisp sambo kits (Carolyn’s Sweets and Pretty Little Ideas can supply you with Crisp Sambo packs!), bags of jellies and some popcorn, nuts or mints (make the mints extra cute with a little mint to be sign or packaging).

5. Opt for Handy Store Cupboard Staples

Photo by Michelle Fiona Photography via Hello May

Another great little favour guests will appreciate is something homely and edible – things like honey, jam and pesto will always be a welcome addition to the store cupboard and there are some incredibly cute packaging ideas out there too if you go down this route. For jams, add a cute ‘Spread the Love’ label or a ‘Meant to Bee’ tag for honey. If you’ve got someone in the family that’s a dab hand in the kitchen, this could be a fun little DIY project to take on!

Or Home Essentials like Matches

Or if you’re after something practical they can use, things like matches and homemade candles will also go down a treat! We love this brill matches idea from Jennifer and Alan’s real wedding and how cute is the ‘perfect match’ packaging.

6. Pool the Cash and Fund Some Photo Fun

Photo via Perfect Photobooth

If you’re not mad on individual favours but still want to do something nice for your guests, another great option is pooling your funds and getting something fun like a photo booth or have a caricature artist pop by to draw some hilarious sketches of guests.

You can hire a Photobooth, Video Booth or Selfie Mirror from the following suppliers:

Shoot Booth | The Fancy Photobooth | Molten Sky Weddings | DMC Events – Photobooth | Carolyn’s Sweets | Selfie Box | Snap Happy | Wow Weddings Photobooth & Selfie Mirrors | Paddy’s Photobooth | Snap Magic Photobooths | Booths of Fun | Imagery Booths | Snapbooths.ie | Precious Moments Video Booth | Partyphotos.ie | Perfect Photobooth | Gueststars Ireland | Selfie Shenanigans | Wedding Letters Ireland | The Rhythm & Booth Co

The candy buffet is one of the most popular trends these past few years and makes a great alternative favour idea! There’s lots of brilliant Irish companies that can create a beautiful display for you – Irish Candy Buffet suppliers include:

Carolyn’s Sweets | Magic Moment Candy Cart | Party Food 4U | Starlight Weddings & Events | Enchanting Events

8. Or Ice Creams All Round

Another awesome idea is to have an ice cream van stop by either after the ceremony to kick start the celebrations or after dinner as a fun dessert idea! Irish suppliers offering this service include Smith’s Ice Cream Vans and if you’re after a cute cart, be sure to check out Adare FarmJG’s Ice Cream and Carolyn’s Sweets. 9. Arm them with Hangover Kits

If you’re looking for a gift you can be guaranteed the guests won’t leave behind, this one is a winner. You can be fairly sure there’ll be some sore heads in the morning so if you’re looking to give guests a laugh and ensure they’re sorted for the morning after, put together some little hangover kits with everything from painkillers and coffee sachets to water and hangover goodies like crisps or sweets in them.

10. Share Your Faves

Photo via Mavora on Etsy | Photo by Finn Mooney

Another sweet way to inject some personality in to your Big Day is by sharing samples of your favourite things with your guests. Real wedding couple Rochelle & Johnny treated their guests to their ultimate fave – the crisp sambo but if you’re not of the same opinion, you can always create small individual favours too, His & Hers style (or His & His/Hers & Hers) and fill them with jellies, chocolates, nuts or anything else that you’ve a penchant for!

22 Lovely Ways to Involve Family in Your Wedding

$

Just a generation ago, many couples didn’t have to think about ‘involving the family’ – without the family, there would be no wedding. In the days when the bride’s parents paid for the celebrations, they couldn’t help but be involved with everything from the guest list to decorations. Now, of course, that’s all changed.

It may seem funny to actually have to plan this, but do keep in mind you’re probably having your wedding your way, so most decisions will be made between you and your significant other. Does this make mums and dads feel left out? It may, especially if their own parents were much involved – and that’s on both sides of the family. Here are 22 realistic suggestions on how you can involve family in your wedding planning and the day itself.

Photo from Sarah & Lorcan’s real wedding by Eric Molimard Photography

Before the wedding

Take a look at your giant wedding checklist. Consider which things you’re not really looking forward to, things you’ve started and haven’t finished, and things you’re already worrying about. Can any of these be done by any members of the family?

We’ll entertain a cliché here – your dad, brothers or best man are usually pretty good with cars and booze. Leave it to them to find all the local alternatives for transport, and maybe even great deals on your own wine to bring to the reception (be sure to check the corkage charges first).

If your sister is particularly crafty, get her help with DIY and décor or if your cousin is a dab hand with flowers, let her help with the pew ends or boutonnières – let those closest to you help you make the day all the more personal.

Ask your mum if you have any family heirlooms that can be incorporated into your bouquet, or go for an entire brooch bouquet with the family jewels at the centre. You could even make the bouquet together.

See if you can schedule some time for ladies who lunch – that would be you, your mum and your future mother-in-law. If the budget allows it, grab some pampering, like manicures, pedicures or facials – you can get great deals on Groupon for example.

If you’re having out-of-town guests, they may need assistance finding reasonably priced accommodations close to the venue. Delegate the calling around and the net surfing to a sibling or a cousin.

Ask members of your family or future mother-in-law to come along to wedding dress fittings – of course, only those who you don’t mind showing your dress to.

Your parents could be very helpful when it comes to choosing the menus and wines – perhaps you might like to take them along to the food and wine tasting at your venue or catering company.

Choose one dedicated person to help you gather all the wedding contacts and addresses. You’ll definitely need a spreadsheet of some kind to keep track of sending save-the-dates, invites, then receiving RSVPs and finally – sending thank-you notes. Gathering this info takes time – and it’s a very important task for a reliable person.

Honour your mum by incorporating something from her own wedding into yours. There are plenty of options – use some of her lace for your veil or a cutaway piece to wrap around your bouquet, wear her jewellery, replicate her wedding flowers or boutonnières, ask the photographer to take a photo of you and your new spouse posed in exactly the same way as your parents are in their own wedding photo.

If the budget allows it, arrange a special day or evening just for you and the parents particularly if they won’t be attending the hen or stag. You could go to a concert, an exhibition, a wine tasting, dinner or even the zoo. Think ‘quality time with parents’.

If you’re having a rehearsal dinner, ask both sets of parents to get involved. It would be lovely if you could treat it as a special dinner out, and leave all the details to the others. Remember to say thank you in the speeches for all their efforts.

Photo from Ruth & John’s real wedding by Emma Russell Photography

At the ceremony

It’s customary for the parents to simply arrive and sit down at the ceremony venue, to wait for the bride. Instead, have them walk down the aisle once all the guests have gathered. They can walk in either before the bridesmaids or after, take their seats, then it’s your turn.

Readings are a lovely way to involve members of the family. If you have many siblings, be sure to consider the time it takes for everyone to do a reading and whittle it down to two or three readings.

Ask parents or siblings to be your official witnesses in signing the wedding register – it’s a real honour.

At your ceremony, ask the celebrant if he or she will allow for lighting of candles or gathering of the roses to be incorporated into the official proceedings. Both families can take part in this, to symbolise becoming one big family unit. Parents can also bring up the gifts at church ceremonies.

At a civil or humanist ceremony, you could include your parents in the hand-fasting ceremony, sand ceremony, or the aforementioned candle or rose arrangement.

Photo from Maeve & Dylan’s real wedding by Tomasz Kornas Photography

At the reception

If you’re having a dessert table, make it extra extraordinary by asking willing family members to bake something special. Recognise their efforts by placing a special thank-you sign at the table, or mentioning them in the speeches.

Of course, the speeches – it’s no longer a strict rule that only the guys do the talking – any member of the family can take part, as long as they’re willing.

If anyone is feeling poetic, ask them to write something they could read instead of a speech. We recommend it’s something lighthearted to carry on the happy mood.

Consider having a special dance with the parents – this could be instead of the first dance (they’ll come onto the floor with you if you’re feeling shy), or it could be the second dance. Discuss the songs beforehand – they may have some good suggestions.

Ask the photographer to take special photos of just you, parents and siblings or even hang photos of you and your OH and your families throughout the years around your venue.

If you subscribe to the tradition of ‘hosting’ a reception table, give this honour to both sets of parents. This means they won’t be at the top table, but they’ll be at tables closest to yours.

You’re on the home stretch – it’s the week or two before the wedding, your to-do list is rapidly decreasing and you’ll be marrying the love of your life before you know it! It’s almost time to say ‘phew, I’m done! Roll on wedding day!’ Of course, there’s a few things you’ll still need to tackle to make sure the day goes off without a hitch (check out our week before the wedding checklist here!) and if you’re heading to your venue for that final meeting or two, we’ve put together a few pointers to make sure you cover all bases. Here’s our final meeting with the venue checklist to help put your mind at complete ease. Remember, your aim is to be the most relaxed bride ever!

If you can’t quite get enough of checklists, then behold – here’s every wedding checklist you’ll ever need!

This checklist is free and downloadable! Click here to download our final meeting with the venue checklist to your computer and bring it along.

• Confirm how much money is owed and when the payment is due

• Is the coordinator going to be there on the day, and how can they be contacted? Do they have to speak to me only, or can my authorised person handle the calls too?

• When can we drop off things like decor, menus, table plan?

• When can we start setting everything up? (if you’re doing your own set-up)

• What are the final timings for arrival, canapes, dinner, entertainment, etc.?

• Who will announce our entrance into the reception venue?

• How will entrance music be played? Through the PA system, or by our band/DJ?

• Do you have a cake stand and knife?

• What is the noise curfew, if you have one? Are there any restrictions or rules DJ/band need to be aware of?

• (If you have a vendor who will be setting up outdoors, like ice cream truck or hog roast) Do you have a designated space for the vendor to park or set-up close to the venue, or the entrance/exit we’ll be using?

• Can you confirm there will be dishes for those who specified dietary requirements?

• Confirm who does the clean-up and if it’s us, what time does it have to be completed by?

• What happens to all the leftover food?

• Will there be meals for suppliers staying through the reception, like the band and photographer?

• Confirm rooms booked for bridal party, family and guests, and any special arrangements – i.e., grandparents must be on the ground floor, etc.

• Will you have the required number of high chairs for babies/kids?

• Should we anticipate any extra expenses that would only be charged afterwards (any damages, bar tab, parking fees, etc.)?

• What happens if people arrive early, are they allowed to wait in the lobby/garden/reception area?

• When are the final guest numbers due?

• How far in advance will you need our seating arrangements/table plan showing who sits where?

• Do you have a stand or an easel to display our table plan? (tell the venue what it is, a light paper poster or a heavy gilded frame, etc.)

• What happens if there’s a change in the number of guests? Can we add more chairs, or take away an empty table on the day?

• Can you confirm the final table layout?

• For outdoor weddings, in case of rain, who will help move everything inside and how long will it take? Will the guests be expected to help?

• Where will we be able to safely store our gifts and cards?

• What happens if things start running late?

• Can we go through all the timings together to make sure there’s enough time for everything?

• (for a venue with accommodations) What is your policy on any hotel rooms we pre-booked for our guests that may not be needed at last minute?

• What is checkout time? Is later checkout available for the newlyweds, or anyone else?

• Do you have any special arrangements with a local taxi company, in case some of our guests need transport?

• Do you offer special packages for people returning for their first anniversary?

Always remember – you’re in good hands! No venue will ever leave coordinating your wedding to someone completely inexperienced. And even if you forget to ask something very important at the meeting, they’re still just a phone call or email away.

The Worst Things Bridesmaids Were Ever Asked To Do!

$

Bridesmaids… they are to a bride what fierce backing dancers are to Beyonce, ladies in waiting to the Queen, and J P Fitzgerald to Rory McIlroy. Without them, nothing would look or be the same. They help the bride through thick and thin, rescue her when she’s weeping into the cake, and hold up the dress when she pees. And yet, and yet… there are times when bridesmaids endure more than they signed up for. Comparing to these demands, helping to pee is about as shocking as being asked to help fold napkins!

So if you’re worried about stress turning you into a bridezilla, just take a look below – these are some of the worst things bridesmaids were ever asked to do! We guarantee you’ll say ‘I would never!’ Then pour that wine and drink a toast to your awesome bridesmaids.

Here’s one of the most famous cases of bridesmaid mistreatment in the last few years. A bride’s email had gone viral around the world for all the wrong reasons. She lays out her plans for her 10 bridesmaids – and boy, are they detailed… They can’t book holidays for the next seven months without her permission, have to be available for three pre-wedding parties in three different states, will be kicked out of the wedding if they take 2-3 days to reply to any email from the bride… and to top it all off, if they can’t afford to contribute money to basically everything, then they can’t be a bridesmaid. You really need to read the full insane email to see what we mean – you’ll find it here.

Over at Elite Daily, a bridesmaid has confessed to being up to her elbows in an industrial trash bin, looking for a lost wedding ring. The bride said it slipped off her finger and she thought that’s where it fell. Sadly we’ll never know if the ring was actually found… but that’s literally the only story this bridesmaid will ever tell about that wedding. This is just one of the few examples they’ve gathered.

A bride asked her red-haired bridesmaid – the only one in a wedding party of brunettes – to dye her hair for the wedding. The bride’s reasoning? ‘She told me my hair would clash with the wedding colours and that brides get a veto over pretty much every aspect of her bridesmaids’ appearances. She also mentioned my hair is quite ‘attention-grabbing’ and I’d take away from the cohesiveness of the group.’ She took to Reddit to ask for advice, and of course most people said the bride was being unreasonable. The final twist came later… it turned out, the groom may have been particularly partial to redheads, and it made the bride nervous. The bridesmaid dropped out of the wedding. As would we!

Be My Bridesmaid card from Etsy

2016 was a year to be remembered for sure – especially for the bridesmaids at a particular wedding. They received an email entitled ‘bridesmaid dress contribution’ – somewhat misleadingly. In it, the bride asked her seven bridesmaids to contribute to the cost of her own wedding dress, because she’d gone way over budget. Her reasoning? The dress would be a representation of all of them and she’d be wearing something they’d all had a part in. The bridesmaids were already contributing to their own dresses, accommodation, hen do, bridal shower, and a three-day spa trip.

Rock’n’Roll Bride had some VERY strong words to say about one bridesmaid’s dilemma… a bride asked her to dye her hair for the wedding AND lose 10 kilos in weight to look thin in pictures. The hair colour seems to be a recurring thing – possibly because it seems so easy to change? The weight loss though… we suspect not many bridesmaids would take kindly to being told!

And while on the subject of weightloss, calorie counting, hair colouring, and being fired by the bride – a terrifying email made the rounds back in 2013. You can still see the full thing on Gawker, but trust us – don’t read it if you’re feeling frazzled in any way today! The bride started innocently enough – six months before the wedding, she wanted to go over some ‘ground rules’. They included: nobody can be skinnier than the bride – two of the bridesmaids are therefore going on a weight gain program. No ‘saggy, baggy eyes’ – there’s a sleep schedule to follow. No new tattoos, and cover the existing ones with makeup for the wedding. Submit all toasts/speeches for approval no later than four weeks before the wedding. Bridezilla or bad boss? You decide. Apparently, three of the bridesmaids no longer speak to the bride.

Thank goodness for Whisper, where people are free to anonymously share their grievances, including things to do with weddings. The collection reveals some real crackers – the mildest one is to carry eye drops and simulate crying at the ceremony. The harshest? Surely the breast reduction – to match the rest of the bridesmaids. For more holy cow, click here.

If you’re a bridesmaid putting up with this kind of behaviour, what do you do? Do you run in the opposite direction as fast as you can? Maybe you should gently and lovingly explain to the bride she’s coo-coo? Or do you simply cross your fingers, do what she asks, and then plot your revenge when the tables are turned? We don’t know all the answers, but to all the suffering bridesmaids out there – we salute you!

Cope or Elope? How to Deal With Family Without Going Crazy

$
0
0

It’s the funniest thing, if you think about it. A wedding is technically for the family – or rather, to bring two families together. Your parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts and uncles are usually the first people to make it onto the guest list, followed by friends. And yet… family can also be the biggest source of wedding planning stress and problems. In fact, many brides at one point or another will just want to drop everything and run away to elope. Why is that? And how do you deal with family without going crazy?

Humour will save you

Nope, there’s absolutely nothing funny about people piling on the pressure with things that aren’t your problem.

Examples: if you invite this person, I won’t come. You booked your wedding too close to mine, how very dare you. What do you mean kids aren’t invited, when we have three and nobody to babysit them.

And on and on, like that.

People are asking you to do things which, in one way or another, will require changing your wedding. Sometimes, it’ll even cost you more money. This isn’t ok. It’s your wedding.

We know this is hard, but to deal with family you must be firm. To the person who’s not coming, say ‘I’m sorry you feel that way, but I won’t be picking between the two of you. I’ll send you an invitation and it’s up to you whether you attend or not. I want you to be there.’

Weddings booked too close… what do they expect you to do, reschedule? Come on. They’re only saying this because they’re afraid of comparisons between the two weddings. Smile and say ‘I’m sorry, but that’s the date that worked best for me and my fiancé. I promise I’ll cancel Ed Sheeran’s performance I booked for mine, mmkay?’

People with kids – they’re getting minimum 6 weeks notice about the wedding, that’s enough time to arrange for someone to watch them. Say, ‘I’m sorry, we’ve decided to have an adults-only wedding, and we’re not sure the venue is kid-friendly. We wouldn’t want anything to happen to them!’

Once you give your firm answer, go home, pour a glass of wine, and have a freestyle ‘what are people like’ rant. Then put on a good comedy and unwind.

Photo from Niamh & Jason’s real wedding by Emma Russell Photography

Get them to give you the answer

This piece of wisdom works for every person who faces complaints. Hey, it even works at work, so if you want to use it go right ahead! Bosses, parents, teachers and brides all have to put up with complaints of one kind or another. When you’re planning a wedding and have to deal with family, it’s bloomin’ infuriating – why do they do it, when all they have to do is show up and enjoy themselves?

The answer – if you come to me with a complaint, come with a solution.

That’s it, that’s the answer. Whatever complaint people throw at you, ask them ‘how do you suggest I fix this?’ To be sure, you’ll get some ridiculous suggestions – feel free to say no! Say no until they tell you something reasonable you can actually work with. Until then, no – it’s your day, and you have the final say.

Be more assertive

Ok, not all of us were born assertive, or direct, or unafraid to defend our opinions. Plus, there’s the family thing – we care about them, so we’re more willing to bend to what they’re asking for. It’s natural and normal, but it also leads to problems when parents get a little bit too involved in the wedding and start driving you crazy.

To be more assertive simply means to stick to your original opinions and not budge. That’s all. You don’t have to argue or explain yourself. Just stick to your original plans. If you’re sure what you’re doing is right, simply keep saying ‘no, this is what we’ve decided.’ Give it long enough, and they’ll stop asking.

Once your wedding day is a blissful memory, you’ll be glad you stuck to your guns.

Photo from Georgina and Joshua’s real wedding by Yes I Du Wedding Agency Dubrovnik

Ask in advance

Many potential wedding problems can be solved if only you asked people in advance. Example – divorced parents who are uneasy around each other (especially if they have new spouses). Solution – don’t automatically put them at separate tables, cross your fingers, and hope for the best. Ask them – ‘mam, dad, how would you feel most comfortable at the wedding? Would you like to sit at tables close by, or far away?’ Done – get them to tell you, no crossing fingers required. At the ceremony, sit the parent you’re closer to in the first row at one end, and the other parent in the second row at the other end.

Example – parents offer to pay an attractive amount of cash towards the wedding. Of course you want to say yes… but you worry they’re going to treat your acceptance as permission to meddle in the planning. So ask in advance – ‘if I accept this gift, does this mean you’ll want to be involved in the planning, or are we free to go ahead however we like?’ You’ll know how to proceed depending on the answer.

Example – chief bridesmaid (or any other bridesmaid) suddenly loses interest in the wedding. She stops replying to emails, doesn’t get involved in discussions anymore, and doesn’t come to get togethers. Don’t sit around wondering what’s going on, or waiting for it to sort itself out – ask as soon as you notice something is off! Say ‘hey, I noticed you’re not yourself lately, everything alright? Is helping me with the wedding too much on top of everything else you’ve got on? Wanna talk?’ You’ll most likely find it’s just a temporary blip.

The future in-laws

Everything we’ve said above applies not just to yours, but to both families. It’s true, sometimes the in-laws-to-be also try to get the couple to change their minds or plans. That’s new drama you shouldn’t be dealing with, so a bit of clever diplomacy is key. First, remember – you don’t want things to get off to a bad start before you’re even married. It would affect things between you and your other half the way dealing with your own family doesn’t. It’s worth keeping things tactful for the sake of peace. And second – if they simply won’t let go of a matter you don’t want to change, or can’t change, arguing won’t help. Instead, get them involved in a different area where you’ll actually welcome their help and opinions. This could be anything – maybe making a layer for the cake, or taking care of the guest-list for their side of the family?

In-laws are sometimes unreasonable simply because they wish they had more involvement in the wedding. It’s worth remembering the wedding is a big important occasion to them too, and they likely don’t want to be sidelined. On your wedding day, remember to say a few warm words about them publicly, perhaps in your speech. They’ll really appreciate it.

When things get tough and emotional and you wish you’d just eloped, remember this – weddings are such weird things. They’re one of life’s best celebrations, but with the biggest emotional baggage. If you tell yourself ahead of time ‘I expect someone in mine or my other half’s family to put some pressure on us sooner or later’, then you won’t be surprised when it happens. Weddings make people act strange in ways you’ve never seen before, and afterwards, everything usually goes back to normal. It may be a bit stressful on the lead up but just remember why you’re doing all of this in the first place – it’s about you and your soon to be hubby or wife!

11 Tips & Ideas for the Perfect Day After Party

If you’re looking to prolong the celebrations, the Day 2 party is a great way to do it! It’s a lovely chance to extend the festivities, chat about the previous day’s fun, check out all the pics your friends and family took as well wind down after the Big Day! If you’re looking for some ideas to pull of the perfect day after wedding party, take a look at some great ideas and tips below…

1. Keep things casual and have it close by

If there’s one thing that’s super important, it’s to keep things as relaxed and as laid back as possible. The day before will have been the big affair and tired guests will be craving some wholesome grub and not much else so be sure to keep things low key with little fuss. And of course when it comes to location, keep the setting close by so guests don’t have too far to travel whether it’s the hotel, a local pub or your house.

2. A late start is essential

It will have been a late night so make sure kick off for Day 2 isn’t too early! One idea lots of couples are loving is a lovely laid back brunch feast. We can’t think of anything better than lots of brekkie treats for guests to tuck in to after a night on the tiles. Make sure it’s not too early – either set a time or give people a window so that they can drop by whenever suits for example 11-1. Irish mobile catering company The Gourmet Kitchen specialise in Day 2 brunches with a seriously mouth-watering menu such as French toast with crispy bacon and maple syrup, Clonakilty black pudding on toast with caramelised onions and poached egg and slow roasted tomatoes or a tasty fry. Find out more here!

3. Have the coffee brewing

Photo courtesy of Bean & Gone – Mobile Coffee Bar

Some guests may find Day 2 a bit of a struggle after all the antics the previous day so coffee and lots of it may be required! If you’re looking to create a fun focal point, mobile coffee unit Bean & Gone can stop by and perk guests up with delicious cappuccinos, lattes and flat whites before they hit the road.

4. Use up your wedding cake

Photo via Baked by Mike

If your cake hasn’t been demolished the night before, now is the perfect time to slice it up and serve it with tea and coffee! It’s a great dessert option for Day 2 or as a little pick me up for people as they pop by to say their goodbyes. You could also have some pie or cake boxes handy (or good old tinfoil!) so that that guests can take a slice with them!

5. A BBQ is always a winner

Photo by Kelley Jordan Photography via The Knot

If you’re not a brunch fan or fancy having a later start, a BBQ or a Pig on a Spit is a brilliant option. They’re perfect for creating an informal, relaxed vibe plus you can lay on a mouth-watering selection of burgers, sausages, kebabs and salads for potentially hungover guests. If you’re keen to go this route, be sure to check out PigSpit.ie who are renowned for their BBQs and hog roasts with trimmings and amazing salads and sides, PigOut.ie who specialise in delicious BBQs, Lamb Roasts, Pig Roasts and Rotisserie Chicken and sides, O’Brien Lynch Catering who can whip a tasty bespoke menu and The Gourmet Kitchen who also can serve up an awesome BBQ Feast.

Adventure Catering, the folks behind Food Trucks The Airstream and The Chip Van can also serve up chip chop faves, gourmet slider burgers and fries and streetfood canapés such as BBQ Pulled Pork Sliders and TexMex Chilli Tacos if you’re after something different!

6. Leave out some games

Photo from Julie & Sean’s real wedding by Michelle Prunty

If you’re having a bit of a day time bash and BBQ for your day after, leave out some games for guests to mess about with. Check out Giant Party Solutions who hire out Giant Jenga, Connect 4 and Buzzwire Challenge.

7. Great music will add to the atmosphere

Photo via Davey Music

If you’re having a day two extravaganza, some great music will keep the party atmosphere going. Singer/song writer Liam Byrne comes armed with a guitar, bodhran, percussion and harmonica and will keep everyone entertained with his brilliant repertoire. Davey Music provides the finest traditional Irish music if you’re hoping to get a ceili going and singer Colin Fahy specialises in after wedding parties so is sure to impress guests with his vocals (he’s also a dab hand with guitar, ukulele and saxophone).

Find Musicians in the weddingsonline supplier directory!

8. A drinks station will keep the craic going

If you’re looking to keep the party going, a fun drinks station should do the trick! There are several Irish companies that have awesome mobile stations such as the Lovely Bubbly Prosecco Van, an adorable pop up Prosecco van with Prosecco on tap, Mae, a vintage inspired mobile cafe/bar available to hire from Vintage Vanp where guests can enjoy signature cocktails or afternoon tea, and The Shebeen, a traditional Irish pub on wheels that will bring the authentic Irish pub atmosphere straight to your Day 2 celebrations!

9. Keep decor to a minimum

Photo by Emily Tyler Photography via Whimsical Wonderland Weddings

Don’t worry about decor – if you want to set the tone for your celebrations, a fun just married banner or some bunting will do the trick nicely! Guests will be wrecked from the day before so won’t even notice little details so make life easier for yourself and stick to a banner or two.

10. Survival Kits may come in handy

You can be fairly sure there’ll be some sore heads the morning after so if you’re looking to give guests a laugh and ensure they’re ready for Day 2 celebrations, you could have a basket full of pick me ups like crisps, water and painkillers so people can help themselves!

11. Keep the bridal theme going with a LWD

Photo via The Coveteur

When it comes to your Day 2 gúna, we’re all for keeping the bridal theme going with a LWD – little white dress. There’s all sorts of great options in stores if you’re looking to wow in white whether you to go casual with a cute dress for your BBQ, a playsuit for pints in the pub or a statement piece for dinner with the family. Pop back to the blog next week where we’ll be showcasing our favourite finds!

10 Lovely Ways to Involve Your Mates in Your Wedding

$

When it comes to picking your bridal party, there’s lots of reasons you might want to keep it on the small side from budget to keeping the numbers even so not all your closest friends might end up being bridesmaids. But just because they don’t have the title, doesn’t mean they can’t be part of the day or get involved. Of course, some friends might not have time etc. (bridesmaids included) but others might be only too glad to help out and give you a hand with any wedding prep! If you are looking to include some mates in your wedding (both the lead up and the Big Day itself), we’ve got 10 lovely ideas below…

1. The Celebrations

Photo via Kate Spade

Your friends will be only too happy to lift a glass of bubbly to toast your amazing news! If an engagement party is not your thing, have a few of the girls around for a bottle of bubbly so you can enjoy some wedding chat and get excited for the fun ahead.

2. Pin Pals

Get your mates to tag you on the likes of Facebook and Instagram about articles that could be of interest or they can send you on pins they think you’ll like (Pinterest have secret boards FYI – so share one with your friends if you’re looking to get ideas)! Or if you’re looking for something in particular, ask your interiors loving buddy to keep an eye out for copper lanterns or your pal that works on Grafton Street to give you a heads up if she comes across a white dress for the hen. And if they’re married themselves, they might have some great supplier recommendations and suggestions that could come in handy so be sure to ask their opinion as well!

3. Wedding Fair Fun

There are certain openings you might need the other half for but if they’re not in to it, dragging the hubby or wife along to something they’ve zero interest in will be no fun for either of you. There are some fab girly events out there you can rope your ladies in to instead where you can enjoy some quality time and indulge in a bit of wedding fun while you’re at it (if some of your friends are getting hitched themselves, they might be only too glad to join you or might like to go along for some champers and craic regardless!). From wedding fairs to sample sales, there are lots of events that might be a great day out for you and the girls. Check out some upcoming events here.

4. A DIY Sesh

Photo via Roots Canada

Wedding planning can be full on so if you’ve some obliging helpers, definitely take them up on any offer of help! Got a load of ceremony booklets to tie together? Or signs that need to be made? If you’ve got some crafty mates, it could be fun to have some DIY sessions over a couple of glasses of vino. You guys can enjoy the chats and a few drinks plus you get help with a fun project. If you’re allergic to DIY stuff, get them to help you put together a fun playlist for the wedding morning or day after instead!

5. Shopping Expeditions

Okay, so you might not want an entourage when you’re going dress shopping but things like accessories, shoes and even decor (trip to IKEA anyone?) can be fun little outings your friends might like to tag along to.

6. Pre-Wedding Pampering

Photo by Heidi Lau via Style Me Pretty

The hen is the perfect chance to get all your girls together and have an amazing night out (check out these awesome temporary tats in the opening pic btw – perfect hen party material)! But if you’ve a group of friends you’re particularly close to, have a bit of pre-wedding pampering like going to get your nails done. If they’re not in the bridal party but live close by, why not ask them to pop by for a ‘first look’ on the wedding morning and grab a snap of you all in all your finery!

7. The Readings

Not everyone can be in your bridal party but if you’re looking to include special friends in your day, the ceremony is a great way to go about it. Readings, prayers, poems – save them for the special ladies (and special guys) in your life so that they feel like an important part of your day.

8. Cute Corsages All Round

Photo by Jodi Miller via Style  Me Pretty

Another gorgeous way to make a fuss of your girls is to give corsages to those closest to you. They don’t have to be in the bridal party – leave out some pretty posies for them to don that morning so they feel even part of the wedding day fun (same applies to the lads – have some extra boutonnieres made up for any mates of the groom that can’t be in the bridal party for whatever reason).

9. The Pics

Your wedding is such a special day and it’s a chance to grab some great photos of you and different groups of friends. The photographer will often ask you if there are certain shots you want so make sure to let him or her know in advance so you can round up the gang and get a gorgeous photo (particularly as everyone is spruced up). It will be a fab keepsake for you all to have afterwards (pop a copy in with thank you cards as a lovely surprise!).

10. Dancing Buddies

Photo from Tara & Fionan’s real wedding by DKPHOTO

Make sure you save a couple of dances for your ladies! If you guys have a song that you love, make sure to let the DJ know and round up the troops once you hear it.

“Your wedding photographs are probably one of the most important things to take from your wedding. They capture the moments of love, laughter and fun throughout the day that will last a lifetime. If you’re reading this and looking to book a photographer don’t hesitate, book these guys. Mark and Fiona are ridiculously talented people and two of the nicest people you will ever work with. The level of skill and professionalism are second to none, but they offer so much more than that. They brought a calm and trust to our wedding day, they took away the stress of worrying about the day and how we would look. They even helped with tips on how to make the day run smoother. On the day, we got caught up with other things but these guys captured moments that we missed, and blended in so effortlessly you honestly wouldn’t even know they were there. The photos are stunning and we will cherish them forever.”

“From the moment I saw Daniel’s portfolio I knew he was the one for us. We have just received our wedding photos and we are blown away. He is AMAZING. I booked Daniel two years before our wedding while planning from abroad. He kept me calm in a moment of crisis (or two) on the big day. He was fun to have with us girls while we were getting ready. I never once felt him taking the photos. He blended into the background and honestly just felt like a wedding guest. We both don’t like the camera and he was great with us. He asked exactly what pictures I did want. Got them done and the rest was of his own accord which we LOVED, I honestly couldn’t imagine Daniel not having been part of our wedding. So from the bottom of my heart Daniel. Thank you for everything. Thank you for making us look good. For being a laugh. And for being calm when I freaked a little. But most importantly thank you for the pictures of a lifetime.”

Lynne & Ken – Married December 2017

Paul Duane Photography | View Profile

“I cannot recommend Paul enough as a photographer to prospective couples. Paul is an outstanding photographer and a true professional from the moment I contacted him. He has an amazing ability to capture the important and emotional moments without you even realising he is there. Not only is he a professional, but he is great fun and we had a lot of laughs with him. At one moment during prep I was basically walking around in circles doing nothing but having a flap and he managed to give me some firm direction to get me back on track. My photographs literally blew me away when we got them and he truly exceeded our expectations.”

Nadia – Married January 2018

M&M Photography | View Profile

“We are extremely happy that we used M&M as our wedding photographers. From our first meeting we were made feel very comfortable and got some amazing pre-wedding photos. On our wedding day, they captured all our special moments. They are very professional, approachable and very friendly. All our guests commented on how amazing the first photos looked. We just received our wedding album today and we could not be happier, the presentation and attention to detail is second to none. We cannot wait to share these with everyone.”

Marianne & Anthony – Married December 2017

Couple Photography | View Profile

“From the moment we first met Ros, we knew she was the photographer for us. From her laid back approach, to understanding what we wanted and her absolute professionalism – we loved every minute with her. We recently got our pictures back and we are blown away by them! The wedding was even featured on weddingsonline – which is a testament to her work. We would highly recommend Couple Photography to anyone getting married. We had a blast with them for the day – from beginning to end! She caught everything we wanted and even more! Check them out before anyone else would be my opinion.”

Melissa & Tom – Married November 2017

Sean Jefferies Photography | View Profile

“Sean we can’t thank you enough for the wonderful job you did at our wedding day recently! And Sheila of course. From start to finish you made everything so easy while capturing the most special moments of our day! You went above and beyond to get our package to us before we went back to Australia, for which we are very grateful and it must be said the photographs are just beautiful! Thank you again!”

Jen & Shane – Married December 2017

Denlo Photography | View Profile

“One of the best decisions we made in relation to our suppliers was to pick Denlo Photography. Denis and Lorraine are an awesome team and nothing is too much for them. The final photos are amazing. They were so helpful from start to finish – even with our big Des Cahill surprise moment at our ceremony. Lorraine is also a dab hand with a needle and thread – she had no problem helping out when we discovered the Mother of the Bride outfit needed a little stitch – you’re a star Lorraine. We couldn’t recommend them highly enough and all our friends and family have commented on how nice they were and how they seemed to really love what they do. Thanks a million guys for such great memories.”

Pauline & Tom – Married September 2017

David Maury Photography | View Profile

“David’s style and quality of photography is amazing. He listened attentively to what we wanted and was very organised having sent us a list of questions ahead of the day such as who our family members were, the wedding party etc and a list of photos we wanted to have. This helped a lot as you can absolutely forget these yourself on the day. It was very relaxed and we didn’t know David was there most of the time. We are delighted with how fast David turned around the photos and album and the quality was second to none. Would highly recommend as your wedding photographer.”

Ernín & Peter – Married March 2017

Ebony & Pearl Photography | View Profile

“After spending huge amount of time studying photographers for our wedding, my cousin’s referral for Ebony & Pearl Photography was an absolute blessing! Their style was exactly what we were looking for, leading up to and on the day they were both amazing and put us all at ease. We have received the photos back and they are more than we could ever have imagined. They have captured every special moment and more than expected. The album they have created for us is now a very treasured procession. I would highly recommend them.”

Sinead – Married May 2017

Laura and Benny Photography | View Profile

“Before getting married I never realised how a photographer can make or break your day. They’re literally in your company for the entire day and how they interact with you and those around you is so important. Laura and Benny were top class in every way. They became like part of the family on the day and got so much done for us without being pushy or making anyone feel uncomfortable. We had chosen a photo shoot in our local cinema and we had such limited time to do something that we wondered what we’d get done. Laura and Benny though had a plan and utilised the time brilliantly. They had a lovely mix between traditional shots and candid photographs and we would recommend them to anyone.”

There are many things a bridesmaid will say on her best friend’s wedding day. I’m so happy for you! You look beautiful! Thank you for choosing me as your bridesmaid! Wedding Hashtags: How to Create One and What to Do With it

$

There are plenty of good reasons to create a wedding hashtag. It’s a free way to give your guests a reason to snap some photos on your wedding day, showing off your nuptials on social media has never been easier, and you’ll get to experience your wedding day from the perspective of your friends and family by looking through their photos online.

How to Create a Wedding Hashtag

Pick something that’s unique

Coming up with something creative and unique is both fun and a little daunting. Your first step is to make sure that your hashtag idea hasn’t already been used before. Go onto Instagram and search for the hashtag, and if it’s been used a handful of times for something that isn’t wedding-related, go ahead and use it! What you don’t want is to have your wedding memories mixed up with photos from somebody else’s wedding. Something like #smithwedding has probably been taken, but #smithwedding210418 is more unique.

Keep it simple and fun

Start with your names and see how those could be incorporated into a hashtag. Simple is best, because it means your guests will remember it! And if they remember it, they’ll actually use it. You could also try using your nicknames, your wedding date, or a cute pun. A hashtag like #amyandchadsawesomeweddingishappeningtoday is probably a bit too complicated for your guests to use.

Avoid misspellings

Try not to choose words that are difficult to spell. If your names or surnames are particularly difficult to spell, you should opt for nicknames instead. Something like #saraanddave might be easy to misspell once the drinks are flowing, so a simple name swap to #daveandsara is much better.

Try a Hashtag Generator

If you are really struggling to come up with a unique wedding hashtag, you should try using a hashtag generator. We found one over at Shutterfly for you to try out.

How to use your hashtag

Hashtags don’t need to be registered. If you want to use a hashtag, all you have to do is start using it! It’s that simple.

Spread the word

There’s no point in putting the time and effort into creating a wedding hashtag if you don’t tell people about it. Start by putting your hashtag on your Save The Date and wedding website. Then on your wedding day, display your hashtag on your programs, menus or cute chalkboard signs.

We’ve gathered some photos from around the web to keep you inspired:
