10 Steps to the Ultimate Day After Wedding Party

$

The day after the wedding is a great time to relax with guests, have the chats and take in everything from the day before. We love the idea of a BBQ and some lawn games for a full-on day after wedding party, or even just a couple of bevs for the couple and guests to toast an amazing day and say their farewells. These days, the day after wedding party can be as important as the wedding day for some (in fact one or two of our experts have said it can often be a better day overall!) with couples being able to completely relax and guests having really broken the ice the day before(!)

We shared a couple of really great ways to spend the day after the wedding on the blog recently – and you should find something to suit most budgets and styles there – but we would always say to keep it casual and hassle free to make sure you can really relax (that means decor is at a distinct minimum, guys!)

Whatever you decide to do the day after (and of course it goes without saying that you don’t have to do anything at all if you don’t want to!) we hope you’ll find these 10 simple steps to the best day after wedding party ever! helpful. Our only major piece of advice (we beg you!) is to let everyone sleep in before the celebrations begin…

It’s here, the day you’ve been counting down to, dreaming of and looking forward to ever since you got the ring on your finger! The wedding morning is such an exciting time – you’ve been building up to it for SO long so make sure to enjoy each and every special minute of it from cute snaps and celebratory toasts to some fun with the girls. Here are 10 things brides should defo make some time for on their wedding morning…

1. Have a lovely brekkie with your family

Photo from Amy & Shane’s real wedding by Insight Photography

It’s going to be a long day so you’ll need lots of energy and what better way to kick start your day than with a lazy brekkie with your family. It can be lovely to sit back and soak up the excitement with your nearest and dearest and anticipate all the fun that lies ahead. It’s also going to be awhile before you get your hands on the canapes at the drinks reception so a bite to eat will set you up nicely for the day ahead!

2. Enjoy the pampering

Photo from Niamh & Jason’s real wedding by Emma Russell Photography

You’ve planned this day to perfection for months on end and now it’s time to sit back and soak it all up. Enjoy having an amazing team fuss over you and getting glammed up to within an inch of your life. Make sure you feel and look the part with some pretty robes and PJs – check out some gorge buys here!

3. Jot down how you’re feeling

One of our real brides Nicola says of the best things she did on her wedding morning was to get up early and write a note to her hubby-to-be. “I got up early the morning of the wedding and took an hour to myself before the chaos began. I used that time to write cards to my parents, Chris and bridal party. If I had been better organised, I would have written the cards earlier that week but actually it was nice to capture how I was feeling that day, and to start the day telling those closest to me how much they mean to me.” If you’re super organised and want to relive your thoughts and feelings on this magical morning afterwards, this gorgeous idea is an absolute winner. Save a few moments to write a note to your partner or pop down how you’re feeling in your diary!

4. Toast your ladies

Photo from Niamh & Jason’s real wedding by Emma Russell Photography

If there’s ever an excuse to pop the Champagne, it’s today! Make sure to save some time to really enjoy a glass of bubbly with your dearest ladies.

5. Have a quiet moment for the gift exchange

Photo by The White Tree Photography via Boho Weddings

More and more couples are choosing to exchange a little gift in honour of the Big Day that they can open as they’re getting ready. If you’ve gone down this route yourself, make sure to take a couple of minutes to yourself so you can unwrap this special pressie from your other half and think about the reason it’s all happening – your partner.

6. Make some time for your parents

Photo from Fiona & Sean’s real wedding by Emma Russell Photography

It’s a super special and emotional day for a lot of people, and your parents are right up there! The wedding morning can be a bit on the mental side with all the beauty prep and can fly by but make sure to save a few minutes for a little chat or a hug with your mum and dad, who will really appreciate some precious moments with you on such a momentous occasion.

7. And have some fun with your girls

Photo from Thomas & Aimee’s real wedding by Kevin Morris Photography

The morning will disappear but don’t waste time stressing over details. Pop on some of your favourite tunes and have some fun with your girls! And if you’re looking for some awesome songs to add to your playlist – take a peek at these!

8. Make some time for photos… and some selfies

Photo from Jessica & Barry’s real wedding by Kevin Morris Photography

Your wedding photos will be super special and will be ALL you want the days after! It can be nice to have a few on your phone to flick through the morning after so make sure to save a bit of time on the wedding morning for a few selfies with the fam or the girls.

9. Enjoy a First Look with your parents/maids

Photo from Julie & Scott’s real wedding by The Fennells

If you want to stick with tradition and wait until the altar to get a glimpse of your bride or your groom, you can still include this sweet ‘First Look‘ idea in to your morning with your parents, siblings or bridal party. Everyone will be dying to see you in all your wedding finery, your parents in particular and if you want to capture this emotional moment, have the photographer on standby for the big reveal. These are pics you’ll definitely treasure afterwards!

10. Get even more excited

Photo from Joanne & David’s real wedding by Peter Rowen Photography

You’re hours away from marrying the love of your life and are finally in the midst of this special day you’ve planned for months if not years. Enjoy this precious count down and all the gorgeous moments it brings. Forget about any last minute details or things that may or may not happen, now is the time to be totally present and soak up all the excitement and fun – you’re getting married!

Intimate Weddings – How, Why, What, Where?

$

You may have already seen the results of the Irish wedding survey, which we publish every year in January. Among other things, we ask the couples about the number of guests. Our latest number – 167. That’s an average, and it’s definitely not small! It goes along with the average wedding cost of €24,447. That’s not a small amount either. Are the two numbers related? Yes, of course they are. No matter how you slice that cake, weddings are expensive.

One of the best ways to beat the expense is to have an intimate wedding. What’s intimate? Well, there are no strict parameters for intimate weddings, but let’s stick to 50 guests and less. It’s just large enough to call it a celebration, but small enough to devote some time to each guest on the day. Also, small enough for everyone to sleep in one medium-sized hotel, if need be. If there’s no set maximum number, then there’s no minimum number either. Couples who elope? It’s just them, the officiant and maybe a witness. And, we have heard plenty of people say they were at a wedding with just 10 people, and it was the loveliest celebration ever. Intimate weddings are all about love, not the crowd.

The pros and cons of intimate weddings

Some couples know from the moment they get engaged they want an intimate wedding. It’s just what suits them better, their personalities, and their preferences. Other couples, they can’t imagine anything but lavish. That’s cool too! But what if you’re undecided? You like the thought of a charming and stress-free day, but on the other hand, you also like the thought of a happy large crowd around you. How do you decide? Let’s examine the pros and cons of intimate weddings.

Pro: smaller budget. Fewer guests automatically means lower expenses. And even if you add an extra person or two later, it won’t blow a huge hole in your budget.

Con: if your chosen venue charges a hire fee, it’s likely to stay the same no matter how small your guest list is. You may find the bulk of your wedding costs goes to the venue hire fee. May not be a good decision, money-wise.

Pro: many more venue options. You can consider places that aren’t perhaps advertising themselves as wedding venues, for example restaurants, museums, art galleries, even historic courthouses. They might not agree to host 200 people, but 50 people or fewer can be served just about anywhere.

Cons: many designated wedding venues have minimum numbers – these could be 60 or 80 people. You may not be able to book your favourite venue because your guest list is too small.

Pro: exclusive venue use. If you like a little bit of privacy, you may be able to hire out the whole place for the day, so there are no strangers, crashers, shoppers or golfers wandering into your celebration. Again, it can be any place.

Con: you may get put into the smallest room. In wedding venues with multiple suites (where several weddings take place on the same day), you may find yourself relegated to the smallest room without many of the amenities of bigger rooms, like private bars, bathrooms nearby, or access to outdoor areas or terraces.

Pro: inviting only the people you want to have there with you on the day, instead of your third cousins twice removed, and uncles you haven’t seen since you were six.

Con: keeping the guest list trimmed could be difficult with family pressure (your mam insists on inviting her best friend’s four children!), or because of obligation (they invited you, it’s impolite not to invite them back!)

Pro: suddenly, getting married abroad is a very real possibility. You couldn’t have considered it with a potential guest list of 150 people… but just a small group, why not? Even if you invite 20 or 30 people, many won’t be able to attend for various reasons. The guest list will narrow itself down considerably. You can now think about having a very small celebration and throwing a party when you get back home for everyone else. It all works out much cheaper than a full-on wedding for 150+ guests.

Con: the best time for a wedding abroad may not be the time you would have chosen for a wedding at home. For example, you’ve always wanted a June wedding, but the best prices in Italy are in September. Would you be willing to move your wedding date?

Intimate weddings – how do they get planned?

First, you must be sure it’s what you want, and your other half wants too. You may be surprised to hear this, but most grooms-to-be, given a chance, would pick an intimate wedding over a huge one. So if he enthusiastically agrees that yes, 50 guests is more than enough, don’t be surprised. So have this chat and see what the outcome is.

Second, find that ruthless streak in you – you’ll definitely need it to keep an iron-clad limit on that guest list. There will be many, many questions asked, like ‘how could you not invite your cousin Patrick, you two were inseparable when you were little!’ The operative word here is LITTLE. Put your foot down firmly and repeat until everyone understands: only those closest to you are invited. Period.

Third, realise you have tons of venue options (as we already mentioned, even those that aren’t usually used as wedding venues!), so ask yourself: what really strikes your fancy? Decide this together with your other half. Make a provisional list of places you’d like to check out, then pick up the phone and start calling. You’ll find there’s a surprisingly huge range of prices and options, so joint decision making is crucial as you narrow down your choices.

Fourth, definitely give getting wed abroad a good and serious consideration. A combo of low prices, superb wedding planners, an option to add a honeymoon, and a wedding that’s small and unusual at the same time is truly irresistible to many couples who want intimate weddings.

10 surprising things about intimate weddings

They’re still viewed as somewhat unusual! 50 guests is still a good number… but try to tell anyone you’re having just 10 or 20! There will be no end to strange looks. It’s alright, don’t let anyone pressure you – if a small wedding is what you want, a small wedding you shall have.

You’ll still be stressed – but differently. Most of your stress will come from people expressing disappointment about not being invited, as well as your mam/dad trying to add people to the list. It’s alright, you don’t have to apologise to anyone for your decision. If you want, pick one reason and use it as explanation to anyone who asks. One thing nobody can ever argue with is a budget. If you say ‘it’s the wedding we can afford without getting into huge debt’, then that puts the end to the discussion.

If you decide to go abroad, remember to send save-the-dates. People need to know as far in advance as possible (even up to one year) so they can book time off work, save up, and prepare for the trip. If you don’t give them enough notice, they won’t be able to attend.

Hiring a wedding planner is still a superb investment. You may think wedding planners are only needed for big affairs, but that’s not the case at all! There’s a reason so many couples say hiring a professional is the best money they spent. A good planner brings you savings, alternative options, good advice, and much more. Get some quotes, it can’t do any harm.

You have much more freedom with your money. It may seem like a contradiction, right? Because with intimate weddings, there’s a smaller budget, so there’s an assumption you’d spend less money on pretty much everything. That doesn’t have to be so! For example, in an intimate wedding, it’s less likely for the couple to have a large crowd of bridesmaids and groomsmen. That takes away the costs of hiring five suits, or buying four bridesmaid gowns. There will be lower costs for alcohol and catering. This means you could hire both a photographer and a videographer, or spend more on your honeymoon.

… but, a smaller wedding could still cost as much as a big wedding. It all depends on the level of luxury you want. If you’d like to splash on something, set an upper budget limit, then pick one or  two things only to keep to it.

In an intimate wedding, the guests will focus on you much more, and vice versa. You’ll have time to speak to everyone. You can arrange the tables so everyone will see each other (like in a circle or horseshoe), helping the two families get to know each other. You’ll never say the words ‘I didn’t know half the people at my own wedding’.

You can upgrade your food to something more posh. You may not be able to feed caviar to 167 people. But to 50 or less? Why not? Instead of salmon, serve lobster. You get the picture. Speak to your caterer about upgrades you could make that cost a little extra, but bring a whole lot of wow.

You can easily have a multi-day celebration. Intimate weddings aren’t just for people with small budgets! If you have the cash and the inclination, make your wedding a two or even three-day do at a venue that has (or is near) accommodations for everyone. Bulk booking will get you major discounts, and it will be like a mini-break for everyone, including you!

You can do something completely unusual. Rent a cottage in an area of natural beauty for everyone. Have a completely casual do, like a picnic, where nobody comes dressed up, and all you have to focus on is amazing food. Have singalongs or storytelling instead of speeches. There’s no limit, really.

intimate weddings

Above image of Empire Bar & Grill in Swords, Dublin

And that brings us to ‘where’

As we already mentioned, you have a very wide choice of venues. In fact, the smaller the guest list, the bigger the selection. Whichever venue you call, remember to ask about flexibility, in case you want to add or take away one or two people.

The best place to start your search is our list of 15 beautiful intimate wedding venues in Ireland. They really pack the wow for those couples who want elegance, but on a smaller scale.

Or if you prefer something more casual, check out the 9 romantic restaurant venues for an intimate wedding. Holding your reception at one of these takes care of the catering side with no effort on your part. You’ll just have to sample the menu and choose the best options. Easy!

If you have any questions about intimate weddings, ask away! Remember, this day is about what you want. If that’s a small wedding, then it’s worth sticking to your guns and having it your way.

11 Things Your Wedding Guests Will Really Appreciate

$

0

Your guests are at your wedding for one reason – to celebrate with you! It goes without saying that you want them to really enjoy the celebrations and make things as stress free and easy going for them while you’re at it. If you’re looking to really impress, there are a few little things that will make all the difference to them on the day from bathroom baskets they can nip over to if they’re in need of a freshen up, some flip flops for when the heels take their toll, a babysitter so the parents can let their hair down and even a coach so the don’t have to worry about getting home! Make sure your guests are well looked after with these 11 great ideas…

1. Directions to Your Venue

Photo from Ross & Amy’s real wedding by DKPHOTO

If you’re looking to make sure guests make it to your ceremony/venue in one piece without wrong turns and frazzled nerves, pop a little map or directions in with their invites. We also spotted this gorgeous idea in one of our real weddings – the thoughtful couple made sure guests didn’t have to worry about getting lost by leaving baskets of maps and celebratory ribbons at the back of the ceremony space so guests could pop one on their car and knew exactly where to head. It’s a really sweet way for everyone to feel part of the celebrations and guests can just keep an eye on the cars with the ribbons so they know where to go!

2. Signposts Along the Way

Photo from Louise & Ciaran’s real wedding by Couple Photography

There’s nothing worse than driving through unfamiliar territory trying to guess which turn it is – of course Sat Navs have made getting to places that bit easier but if you’re looking to point guests in the right direction, some sign posts with balloons are a nice touch and will make sure they know they’re on the right track. And at the wedding itself, make sure to clearly mark where guests need to go when they arrive – same applies to any other little details you’ve planned like a photo booth or al fresco drinks reception, you want guests to appreciate all the work you put in so make sure they’re clearly marked! If you’re looking to get signs made up, pop over to River Lane Memories and Jazzy Creationz who both specialise in beautiful, personalised wedding signs.

3. Spare Seating

Photo by Nastja Kovacec via Junebug Weddings

The drinks reception is a lovely chance to mingle and enjoy some canapes and a few drinks after the ceremony. But it can get tiring fast if there’s not enough seats to go round. If you’re having a summer wedding and the sun is out, this little idea will go down really well particularly with anyone in heels! Leave out a few baskets of blankets so anyone in need of a seat, can throw down a blanket or if you’re tight on space, have some spare fold out chairs propped up against a wall so guests can grab one if need be.

4. Bathroom Basket Essentials

Photo by This Modern Romance via Style Me Pretty

The bathroom basket has become a bit of a wedding trend with thoughtful couples loving the idea of leaving out some practical goodies for guests to use during the day. These little hampers full of essentials will be a big hit with both ladies and gents with guests flocking to them throughout the celebrations for mints or a squirt of perfume. Include things like wipes, safety pins, chewing gums, hairspray, mini deodorants, scissors and plasters – check out our ultimate wedding bathroom basket checklist here!

5. A Night Off

Photo from Alex & Neil’s real wedding by Lyndaloo in Spain

If you’re looking to really treat the guests with kids, one of the best things you can do is hire some entertainment or a professional childminder who can keep the kids busy for a few hours. There are several companies that specialise in childcare at weddings – Fun ‘n Frills set up a Supervised Portable Activity Areas in the ballroom so the kids can see you and will keep them entertained with crafts and games. FUNtastic Childcare Events can also supervise and play with the kiddos and come armed with goody bags to keep them happy. Or magician Magic Carl and his little companion, Mr Fluffy the magic rabbit will keep them laughing and amazed for a couple of hours or during the speeches with his awesome tricks and fun balloon models.

6. Yummy Menu Options

Photo from Isobelle & Edward’s real wedding by DKPHOTO

Vegetarians often get a raw deal with a limited or run of the mill menu option so make their day with a fun and surprising menu choice or if you’re going buffet style, even a couple of tasty options. The veggies out there will also be super happy you thought of them! Food intolerances are also more and more common and guests that have trouble with their food will really appreciate you going that extra mile to ensure they’re catered for – it can be good to check if anyone has any foodie issues early on at the invite stage so they get a meal they can enjoy on the Big Day.

7. Flip Flops for Tired Feet

Photo from Alex & Neil’s real wedding by Lyndyloo in Spain

We love when we catch a glimpse of a flip flop basket at weddings and we bet your guests will too! It’s a long (but fun) day particularly for anyone in heels so a flip flop basket will be a welcome sight for any guests whose shoes are getting the better of them and want to have some fun on the dance floor. Pair it with a cute ‘Dancing Shoes’ sign to encourage all sorts of antics!

8. Umbrellas on Standby

Photo by Carla Ten Eyck Photography via Style Me Pretty

Regardless of whether you’re having a summer or winter bash, you just never know what the Irish weather will throw at you! If Met Eireann hasn’t predicted favourable weather for your wedding day, it can be handy to have a basket of brollies on standby at your venue in case guests need to borrow one whether they’re nipping out to their car for something or popping out to the smoking area. And if there’s an outdoorsy part to your day, it can also be nice to have some shawls and blankets hanging about that guests can cosy up with in case they get chilly.

9. A Thank You!

Photo from Tara & Fionan’s real wedding by DKPHOTO

A lot of couples like to pop by their guests tables to have a chat and let them know they appreciate them being there, another option is the receiving line after the ceremony. But if you’re worried you might not get around to everyone, a sweet thank you sign with some heartfelt words is a lovely little way to let guests know how much it means to you that they’re there. Check out some lovely ideas and ways to display it here!

10. Taxi Numbers for Getting Home

The likes of Hailo have made getting a taxi way easier but for those that won’t be relying on their phone, or aren’t that tech savvy, go old-school and display a helpful sign with some local cab company numbers – this will defo be appreciated by guests looking to make their way home!

11. Or Being Chauffeur Driven

Bus available from Dualway Wedding Coach Hire

Or if you’ve the budget, take the pain out of travelling and ensure guests can really let their hair down by arranging for some coaches to stop by when the celebrations end and do runs to local hotels or the city centre, depending on where you’re based (they can pick up people straight from the ceremony too earlier in the day). There are lots of companies that offer a coach service including Mackey Coaches or if you’re looking for something with some vintage flair, VintageCoach.ie and Dualway Wedding Coach Hire have some vintage coaches available for hire.

2. Have a first look – On the wedding morning, ensure they feel part of the wedding fun by having their very own first look with mam or dad if they’re old enough. Make sure the photographer is on standby too – these will be pictures you’ll treasure forever!

3. Give them a special role within the bridal party – Whether they’re bridesmaids, groomsmen or the most adorable flower girl and page boy.

4. Have them walk you up the aisle – Make your walk up the aisle extra special by having your kids walk with you.

Check out 15 of our favourite ways to personalise your wedding below…

1. Start the Day Off with Some Cute Hangers for the Gúnas

We’re a big fan of all the little touches for the wedding morning prep from cute robes and PJs for you and the girls to hangers for the gúnas. We love the idea of surprising the maids (or bride) with a gorge hanger for their dress with a little note about how much they mean to you – it’s a great gift idea and will mean the world to the bridal party too! If you’re looking to pick up some hangers, pop over to Jazzy Creationz and Akito Avalanche Wedding Hangers.

2. Showcase your personality with some fun socks

For the lads, it’s all in the details and the humble sock is a great way to add some personality. Whether you’re a superhero fan, love your stripes or spots or want to make it known that you’re the groom/groomsman with some wedding socks, this fun little idea is a great photo op and is a nice way to showcase your personal style. Pick up wedding socks from Lantz Weddings.

3. Choose meaningful readings and songs

When it comes to your ceremony, your song choices and readings are one of the best and easiest ways to personalise your day. Choose songs you both love or that mean something to you – Walk in to your favourite song, sign the register to a tune that meant something to you and your partner at some stage in your relationship or dance up the aisle to ‘your song’. Be sure to take a look at 20 Beautiful Songs for Your Walk Down the Aisle and 20 Brilliant Songs for Wedding Ceremony Exit for some inspo and if you’re after some beautiful readings, take a peek at these!

4. Include Some Sweet Signage

Photo from Tara & Gearoid’s real wedding by DKPHOTO

We love our signs here in weddingsonline HQ and when they’re personalised – even better! Your wedding day is all about you as a couple so celebrate your love story with some amazing signage personalised with your names, initials or favourite quotes. There are some great Irish companies that specialise in personalised signage including River Lane Memories and Jazzy Creationz – click on the links to check out their portfolios.

5. Personalise Your Number Plates

Photo from Lisa & John’s real wedding by Kathy Silke Photography

Get the celebrations started straight away with some seriously cute number plates! It’s a lovely way to spruce up your getaway car and will make for some fun photos as well.

6. Showcase Your Favourites through Your Menu Choices

Photo by Women in Wedding via weddingsonline UAE

Your menu is another place that can reflect you as a couple. Opt for your favoruite cocktail for the drinks reception or have your most loved dessert on the menu (you could even have both yours and your partner’s favourite dessert as an option and let guests pick their top choice). Another lovely idea is the dessert table if you’ve a sweet tooth or if you love your cheese, why not opt for a wedding cheese cake?

7. Pop Some Photos Around the Venue

Photo from Julie & Sean’s real wedding by Michelle Prunty Photography

One of the best ways to personalise your day is with photos. Use some photos of you guys as kids as table names, pop some pics from your travels together around your venue or have a photo wall in honour of your love story – it’s a lovely way to make the day all about you and guests can see how it all began!

8. And why not make it a Family Affair

Photo from Maeve & Dylan’s real wedding by Tomasz Kornas

And it doesn’t have to be just photos of the two of you! Give a little nod to your parents and grandparents love story with some photos of them on their wedding day. Pop them by the guest book, beside your wedding cake or around the venue mixed in with your own snaps.

9. Opt for Fun Table Names

Photo from Julie & Scott’s real wedding by The Fennells

Table names are one of the best ways to inject a bit of personality in to your wedding! The wedding team at Roganstown Hotel & Country Club recommend using them as opposed to just table numbers: “It is always lovely to personalise your wedding day to suit your individual personalities and ‘naming’ your guests tables always brings a smile to the guests – whether it be places you have visited around the world or your favourite football teams – even use photos on the table names! Here at Roganstown Hotel & Country Club we love to help our wedding couples make their wedding day special and always recommend that they personalise their day to their tastes. We can arrange table names to suit our wedding couples – which is always a great talking point for their guests during the wedding dinner!”

10. Have Your Own Wedding Hashtag

Photo from Kathleen & Gary’s real wedding by The Fennells

If you’re looking for a fun way to get guests involved and give your celebrations its very own name, create a personalised hashtag so guests can tag their photos on the likes of Instagram or Wedpics. It means you get a peek at everyone’s snaps and it’s a cute personal touch to boot.

11. Include Your Initials

Photo by Feather & Stone Photography via Green Wedding Shoes

Your decor is another great way to celebrate your love story and make the day all about you guys. You can pop your names or initials on just about anything from napkins and wine labels to drink stirrers and signs, use your initials as a fun, alternative guest book or give your space the wow factor with some light up letters spelling out your names. Check out some awesome ways to use light up letters here!

12. Go Personal with Your Cake Topper

Photo from Sharon & Tadhg’s real wedding by Eden Photography

We’re all for personalised cake toppers and there are so many cute options for couples looking to bring some added fun to their tiers. You can have everything from peg dolls or a miniature version of you and your partner to cute calligraphy style toppers with your names and the wedding date or even some cheery bunting with your initials!

13. Keep your Favours Close to Your Heart

If you want favours at your Big Day, think about what it is you love and go from there. Coffee fiend? Put some little kits together that guests can take home or if your all time favourite snack is a crisp sambo, have a crisp sandwich station for later in the evening. You could even put together little his ‘n’ her style favours with packages of your absolute favourite treats whether it’s nuts or jellies. Another beautiful idea is to donate to a charity that is close to your heart for example Make-a-Wish Ireland or Self Help Africa.

14. Have a Slideshow of Pics

Photo via Bride Box

A slideshow is another lovely way to display some relationship milestones, photos from travels and adventures and any other snaps that will give guests a bit of an insight in to your relationship (or a laugh)! Baby photos are a must!

15. Share Your Love Story

Photo by Ray & Kelly Photography via Wedding Chicks

If you’re looking for a romantic way to personalise your day, The ‘Love Story’ sign is just perfect! It’s a great way to give guests a bit of a history lesson and share some cute milestones and info with everyone about your journey as a couple.

If you’re getting married in a hotel or venue and won’t be getting ready from home, there’s quite a few bits you’ll need to remember for the day itself and of course Day 2 if you’re keeping the party going. 1. Don’t keep the guests hungry and waiting… This has happened to all of us, right? You were going to a great party, and you either didn’t eat anything because you were running late, or you knew there would be great food served so you were ‘making room’ for it. Inevitably, the time until dinner stretched for days, and at some point you probably thought you would faint. Well, some of your guests will be feeling this way too. This is so easy to avoid. If the time between arrival and dinner is an hour or more, serve a variety of bite-size finger food to take the edge off.

2. … but don’t overfeed the guests either. First, mind the season. It’s generally better to keep the fare lighter in the summer and warming in the winter. Then, think about how much food you’d eat on average in a restaurant, and don’t go far beyond that. It’s very tempting to serve lots of amazing food, but then come disco time some guests will still be in a food coma. If you don’t know how much is too much, ask the professionals – the venue chef or the caterer. They’ll know exactly how much to serve so your guests don’t fall asleep.

3. Serve amazing food. Food is, without a doubt, one of the things guests remember the most. It’s really worth investing some time (and a little extra money) into truly extraordinary dinner. And it doesn’t have to be all three courses either. Do an amazing main and keep the rest simple. Or go for great starters and fantastic desserts. We promise your guests will love it! If you want some ideas, here are 15 wedding food stations that’ll make your mouth water.

4. Keep the kids occupied. If you’re having children at the wedding, put yourself in their (tiny) shoes. It’s a really long day for them, alternating periods when they have to sit still for a long time, followed by running around like crazy because there’s so much stimulation. As for the parents, they would love a chance to kick back and relax a bit too. A dedicated kids’ table plus goodie bags are always a good idea. A wedding nanny or childcare is an even better idea – FUNtastic Childcare Events and Fun ‘n Frills are two such services. They’ll keep kids safe, busy and happy. It’s one of the best investments you could make for a wedding with small children.

5. Quiet areas away from the music. You’ve probably been to a wedding where a large number of guests went home as soon as the first dance was over and the DJ kicked up the beat. We’d wager it was because they knew their socialising was over. Not everyone will want to dance at the reception, but people love catching up with a glass of wine after dinner, and they can’t do that when they have to shout over the music. If you haven’t checked it out already, ask the venue for help in advance, so they can have it ready on the day.

6. Signs. If you’re at a venue where everything is literally one door away, then this isn’t necessary. But if it isn’t immediately obvious where the toilets, bar or lawn games are located, then you’ll need to put up some signs. Make them as fun or as themed as you like!

simple things that make a wedding reception fabulous

7. No long gaps between key moments. Standing around for long periods of time and not knowing what’s going on is a total wedding joy killer. Especially when there isn’t anything to drink or enough room to sit down. If you have long stretches of time between any parts of the day (for example, between arrival at reception venue and serving dinner) then go over your day’s timings with your wedding planner or venue coordinator. If adjustments can’t be made, then make sure there will be drinks, seats and maybe some entertainment available to fill the time (budget allowing).

8. Arrange a surprise. If the budget allows, allocate some money to something people aren’t expecting. It could be anything from a singing chef to surprise everyone come dinner time or a magician, or a caricaturist. On the other end of the scale, there are Irish dancers, trad bands or even acrobats or mime artists. Check out more entertainment options in weddingsonline’s directory. When you hear the delighted gasps from the audience, you’ll know it was money very well spent.

9. Keep speeches short. The momentum of the day needs to carry on nicely, and very long speeches are the equivalent of cruising down the motorway when a sudden traffic jam appears out of nowhere. That’s easy to sort out, just keep everything at the three-minute mark. If need be, share this complete guide to the wedding speech with all relevant persons.

10. Flat shoes. That includes everyone, even the bride! Make sure to bring a pair of flats to wear for dancing. If you have room in the budget, get a basket of flip flops for your female guests. It’s one of the most appreciated gestures at a wedding, no question about it.

Photo from Nikola & Gary’s real wedding by Zi Fernandes Photography

11. Have a professional in attendance. By a professional, we mean the venue wedding coordinator, your own wedding planner, a master of ceremonies, or anyone else who’ll have authority to step in and sort out any problems. You shouldn’t be sorting out problems by yourself on your wedding day, like calling taxis for uncles who got drunk too fast. Make sure to ask the venue who will be with you for the day or your wedding planner if they’re staying with you throughout the day.

12. Get the music right. This one is easy too: just use common sense. Upon arrival at the venue, people want to chat, mingle, enjoy the canapes and have a glass of wine. Keep the music soft and at low volume, so nobody has to shout. Then, at dinner, turn up the volume and the beat a bit, to create a nice buzz. But just a bit! Finally, it’s time for the DJ or band to do their thing. When you book them, make sure you give them a list of songs you DON’T want them to play – it’s just as important as the list of songs you DO want them to play. The rest of the playlist should lean heavily towards songs everyone can dance to. If you have any particular preferences (for example, you love a bit of punk) then by all means add a song or two to the list, but don’t make the entire evening a tribute to one musical genre. If you want to keep that dance floor full, give every guest a reason to get down on it.

10 Things Nobody Tells You About Wedding Planning

$
0
0

Nobody except the weddingsonline crew, of course! You could use all the checklists in all the land, and still find many surprises – good and not so good – along your wedding planning journey. Let’s have a look at a few things nobody tells you about wedding planning, shall we?

You’ll love wedding planning at first – and then you’ll not love it so much

Getting started is awesome – what’s not to like? Venue tours, cake tasting, dress shopping, major love from the newly chosen bridesmaids… it’s all fabulous and so much fun! But at some point, you may find yourself falling out of love with planning – and it won’t be your fault. Someone will get stroppy about the guestlist. You’ll be given far too much unwanted advice. One of your bridesmaids will suddenly have a personality transplant, and you’ll start wishing you never asked her. At one point, you may just find yourself thinking ‘I wish I’d eloped’. But don’t worry! This all passes.

Saying ‘no’ to people is seriously difficult

Some of us have no problem saying ‘no’, while some other of us – very much so. Even if you’re an assertive person, you may just be surprised how your resolve will suddenly wobble… and you’ll agree to a few things you had no intention of accepting. We’d like to tell you – it’s ok! It’s your wedding, and you deserve to have it exactly the way you want. If you’re really struggling, say ‘I’ll ask my other half and get back to you’ instead.

Your other half will inevitably surprise you

You think you know your significant other like you know yourself. But a wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime event – so people sometimes act in a once-in-a-lifetime way. If your other half’s usual uniform is slouch-casual, they’ll suddenly discover the joy of cufflinks and cravats. They’ve never shown any interest in pop music – turns out they know all Simply Red songs by heart, and want at least 20 on the party playlist. Or, they’re simply not as interested as you expected them to be – they just want to turn up at their own wedding. Of all the things nobody tells you about wedding planning, this is a biggie.

It’s really, really hard to match unusual hues

Gold, red, purple – everyone knows what they look like. But as soon as you get into dusty rose, periwinkle blue or jade green, you’ll discover everyone has a different idea of what they look like. Plus, there’s always the pesky online ordering – what you saw on the screen is not what arrives in the post. You’ll learn pretty quickly to never go shopping without a sample to match things to. And when ordering online, the return policy will really matter.

People who aren’t invited may not be keen on wedding small talk

Every bride should be enthusiastic about her wedding – it’s one of the most exciting events of a lifetime! But it’s best to curb your enthusiasm around people who aren’t invited. You’ve got all that new wedding lingo you picked up, amazing bargains you found, and your cake will be out of this world… but they won’t give your news the response it deserves. It’s best to share with people who are actually involved, and keep it to the important stuff. And remember, there’s life outside the wedding too, which you should be enjoying with your mates the same way you did before you got engaged. Which brings us nicely to the next point…

Time-out is as important as time-in

You simply must take time out from planning. At first, when it’s all fun, you might be wishing you could spend every waking hour doing it. But, inevitably, there will be a turning point (see the very first item on this list!) You simply must take time off for normal life things. We suggest wedding-free days during the week, one completely wedding-free weekend per month, or anything else that works for you. Spend this time with your other half, do things you loved doing before you became engaged, and hang out with people who are in no way connected to your plans. Trust us, it’s going to be a game-changer.

If you buy loads of stuff, it may be hard to get rid of it afterwards

So you’ve bought eight apple crates to create a decorative masterpiece outside the venue… 40 candle holders – four for each table… 54 meters of tulle – because decor… and 180 paperweights as favours – because they’re awesome and from IKEA. What will you do with all of it after the wedding? You’ll be surprised how many future brides don’t want to buy other brides’ used things. Listing everything on eBay will take ages, most things will sell for 99 cents, and then you’ll be standing in queues at the post office until the staff know you by name. There’s a better way!  Ask the venue if they have anything you could borrow, or hire everything. And make favours edible, or buy lottery tickets. Done!

Get everything in writing

If a supplier or a wedding coordinator at the venue promises you something extra (for free, or for a small additional charge that’s too good to miss), ask them to confirm it in writing! It’s not rude – it’s good common sense. It’s how you avoid arguments, double bookings, and also how you get refunds.

Sewing takes a lot longer than you imagine

Ha! This is a true-life scenario we’ve heard of again and again. Someone’s aunt, grandma or friend says ‘I’d be so happy if you let me make the bridesmaids’ dresses’. Who’d say no? It’s so nice, and you could have the exact design you want, for much less than you expected to spend. But… don’t be surprised if they’re still not finished on the day of the wedding. For this to work, it needs to be done waaaay in advance. Or ask them to make just one dress. Or just invest in safety pins and hope for the best.

DIY isn’t for everyone

Since about 2012, it seems a wedding isn’t complete without at least one bit made lovingly by the couple with their own bare hands. Some brides see more glue than their own fiancé. And we’re sure many feel their wedding would be criticised if it didn’t have that DIY aspect. Please believe us when we say – DIY isn’t for everyone, and your wedding won’t be any less amazing without it. Here are some great ways to personalise without any crafting accidents whatsoever.

“Ronan, we are beyond delighted! You did amazing on the day, were so lovely to have around and what a fantastic result you’ve given us to keep forever. One of the best things we spent our money on and I don’t say that lightly. I highly recommend you to anyone getting married who wants to have something special to keep for years and years to come. If other brides or grooms are on the fence or are thinking it’s another expense they don’t want, I’d scrap something else! For example we got rid of our photobooth and saved a bit more money to stretch for a video as it was something I knew we could keep. So to future brides and grooms, book Ronan you won’t regret it! Your wedding day goes in the blink of an eye and you miss a lot so this is something you treasure :)”

“I knew from the first email I sent Johnny that he would be a pleasure to deal with. I could tell from his response to my query that he was very approachable, friendly and professional. During the lead up to our wedding, he responded to all emails/queries promptly. He also made an effort to meet us prior to the wedding (even made us a cuppa tea!!!). This made us more comfortable about what was going to happen on the big day and confirmed to us that we had chosen wisely. He has a very relaxed approach and was discreet when filming which we both wanted in a videographer. Nonetheless, he was able to provide direction as needed. We loved the same day edit that he did for us. It was a great end to our meal and speeches. Thank you for everything Johnny!”

“Tommy, thank you so much for providing your services on our wedding day. You were extremely professional, friendly and stealthy. You recorded the whole day perfectly. I particularly enjoyed the aerial shots of Ballyhale, Headford and Glenlo Abbey. It truly captured how beautiful the countryside in Galway is. We couldn’t recommend you highly enough. Watching our wedding video took us right back to our special day. Since receiving the link, I have watched it countless times and I know I will never get bored. We couldn’t be happier with the outcome. We are extremely grateful.”

“Myself and my husband were delighted with our wedding video Cyril made for us. It captured all the special moments of our day that can be almost forgotten as so much goes on, it can be hard to take it all in. When we got home from honeymoon, we got to watch back the moments that photos can’t always capture, we were delighted we made the right choice, we can show our children in the future our special day. Cyril was very professional and on time, he worked well under pressure and gave us exactly what we asked for. Thanks again Cyril for our video. We would recommend him to anyone looking for a professional video and great value for their money.”

“My husband and I found it difficult to find a good videographer for our wedding until we came across a video from D.Art. Wedding Stories on YouTube, we were very impressed so we contacted them straight away, they were very quick to get back to us and were very helpful with all of our questions. We met them a few weeks before the wedding to discuss everything, it was great as they were very professional and friendly so we knew we were in good hands on our big day. They arrived on time the morning of our wedding and they dressed very smartly. We barely knew they were there recording us and they were not intrusive. The day we received our wedding DVD was like Christmas morning, all we can say was it was just amazing!!!! There was not a dry eye in the room as we all watched it, they captured everything and as requested, involved our children so it was so special to watch them as there were some moments we missed during the day chatting with everyone. All we can say is book them fast as you will not be disappointed, we are so grateful to them for capturing all of the amazing memories made on our special day.”

They were so lovely to deal with and were fast responding to any of our needs. On your wedding day, you will not even realise they are there. All of our guests commented on how they didn’t even realise we had a video. The icing on the cake was receiving the wedding video, it was amazing, the detail and moments that were captured were so breathtaking. Thank you so much Gerry and Maria. “We could not recommend Lifetime Pictures enough for any couple looking for the perfect wedding film. Andras and Ester went over and beyond for us to make sure we got exactly what we wanted. I only had to meet with them once and I knew they would be a perfect fit for us and our families. They were so friendly, accommodating and professional. The lines of communication were open with them from start to finish and they were so flexible with any of our requests. They organised a drone for us and thankfully, due to the good weather, we could use it on the day and got some amazing images. The attention to detail from both Andras and Ester was just unbelievable and something we will be forever grateful for. The day goes by so fast but the film we got from Lifetime Pictures was just the icing on the cake to allow us to relive our day over and over. A million thank yous.

“We were so impressed by Duarte right from the moment we chose to go with him. At the time we were living in Canada and he was so responsive to our emails and really put our minds at ease that we were in good hands and boy were we! Working as an editor in TV and Film myself, I was always going to be quite critical about who I chose to shoot our wedding. Duarte’s work has blown me away. The footage is beautiful – gorgeous camera work and exceptional attention detail. Somehow, without us even feeling his presence, he managed to capture all of our personal details and so many incredible moments. He has been a true gent to work with and was so brilliant on our wedding day. His work is amongst the best that I have seen and matches anyone that I have worked with in the industry. I cannot recommend Duarte highly enough. He has a keen eye, a creative hand and an amazing talent for capturing your most special moments. Thank you for the most beautiful footage Duarte!”

It brought back so many memories and even reminded us of some of the things we had forgotten in the hustle of the day. I would definitely recommend having the videographer in addition to the photographs. Overall we had a really great experience with Mark and Fiona, they couldn’t have been more professional or friendly and I would highly recommend them to anyone.”

Wedding Dress Regrets – What To Do

$
0
0

Are you having wedding dress regrets? It’s ok, you can tell us. Nowadays, ‘I’ve found the one’ doesn’t just mean your future spouse – it’s now the dress too! The wrong choice could lead to tears and disappointment. What to do?

It’s undeniable – the dress is always the THING. It’s what many brides look forward to the most. It’s when they get to be the princess for a day. It’s a secret best kept from the fiancé(e), not just because of bad luck and all that, but because of the ‘wow’ factor. So you go to the store, try on several dresses. Maybe you get swept away by compliments, or the sales girl says it’s the last one and comes with a discount, or maybe it’s your 12th store and you still haven’t hit the jackpot, but the one you have on right now seems sort of better than all others. You pay a deposit, you go home, you go to bed with niggles, and by the time you wake up, they’ve turned into major regrets.

You don’t like your wedding dress.

‘I should have known’, many brides say. ‘I didn’t cry when I put it on’. Well, tears aren’t an indicator of a successful shopping trip. Your mam probably cried at every dress you tried on, and that would lead to bankruptcy. The crying thing is yet another expectation that brides got stuck on somehow (akin to an engagement ring having to cost two months’ salary – a genius marketing ploy by De Beers).

The truth is, there are millions of wedding dresses out there, with literally hundreds of thousands of new ones being made every year. Don’t you think finding ‘the one’ among them might be a wee bit of a challenge? The dress you need to buy is the one that fits you perfectly, accentuates your best assets and flatters any imperfections.

Before you buy

Look at lots of photos and identify some looks you love. Are you leaning towards full skirts, lace, frills or vintage? It’s a good indicator of where your tastes lie. Please do keep an open mind when you look at the professional shots – most of those models are inhumanely thin and stand on boxes to look even more like willowy gazelles. Unless you’re one of them yourself, it’s best to look at the dress alone.

Ask someone you trust about your assets – if you don’t already know what they are. Tiny waist? Gorgeous shoulders? Swan-like neck? Killer legs? Show them off! You could also ask someone you trust about your imperfections, if you feel comfortable enough. The more you know, the better the chance of getting the right dress.

If you don’t want to ask, it’s shop ladies to the rescue. We can’t even tell you how many times brides set their minds on one style, only to be shown another they never would have looked at before and BOOM – that’s the one. Tis true, the shop ladies have a commission to earn. But they’re also total professionals and they don’t want any dresses to be returned. So it’s in their best interest to show you nothing less than perfect.

Check out our complete A-Z guide to wedding dress shopping for brilliant advice!

If they’re mean to you, leave. Sorry to put it so bluntly, but you’re about to spend a big chunk of money on a very important outfit. They shouldn’t have your money if you feel in any way belittled or ignored, or even worse.

Don’t buy the dress on that very day – sleep on it. Most bridal stores will give you time to think about it, so you’ll be able to get back to them with a final yes or no. Also, ask about the return policy, or ‘cooling-off period’, if any. You may have to sacrifice part of your deposit.

After you buy

wedding-dress-alterations-couture-care

Image via Couture Care Alterations

Has it been altered yet? Trying on a dress that hasn’t been altered to fit your shape may leave you feeling a bit meh. It can be hard to picture that final end result on that first fitting but do bear in mind that the seamstress may still have to work her magic on it and before you disown it completely. It will be like a different dress when it’s been altered.

What exactly don’t you like about your dress, and can it be fixed? Believe us when we say, seamstresses can perform miracles. Too flouncy? Take some stuff off. Too plain? Add some embellishments (sash, beading, jewellery, funky shoes). Uncomfortable? A small alteration can make all the difference. It’s easier to fix problems when you know what they are.

Speak to the store. Some will take a dress back, but will keep the deposit or part of it. Consider if it makes sense to cut your losses. Don’t rely on eBay too much, you should only realistically expect to get back about a quarter of the price. Ask if you can exchange, or if they have any advice on what else you can do.

Don’t worry about what your fiancé(e) and guests will think. Whatever your dress worries, we guarantee nobody else thinks the same. No groom ever looks at his bride walking towards him, and thinks ‘gee, that style really isn’t doing her any favours’. No guest ever thinks ‘she’d look perfect if only there were more rhinestones.’ A bride is a beautiful sight to behold – the details don’t matter. All anyone ever says is how happy or radiant she looked – not that her dress had too much lace.

Don’t make yourself feel worse by looking at more dresses. Of course you can still look, but it doesn’t mean you’ve made a mistake. There’s looking for enjoyment, and there’s looking for your next dress. Concentrate on how to fix what you’ve bought, not on finding a replacement where possible.

Try a creative solution. Do you really think your dress is too plain? Consider statement jewellery and let it do all the talking. Is it too big, too much, bit too Princess Diana? Consider a redux – taking away some layers, adding a simple satin bolero, taking off some bling. Is it ok, but could use some wow? Consider amazing shoes, a stunning cape, or a really fantastic bouquet.

Don’t judge the dress by the dress alone. You already know every outfit looks better when your makeup is perfect, your hair gorgeous and you’re wearing the most amazing shoes. So next time you go to try on your dress, make sure you’re all made up and dazzling – it could make all the difference. In fact, it’s the first bit of advice real brides-to-be give each other when faced with this dilemma. See the total look and then check how you feel. The hair and makeup plus veil or headpiece could make all the difference.

Bite the bullet. If you truly, truly end up hating it, and it gives you sleepless nights, it may be time to reconsider your purchase. Speak to your fiancé(e) or your mam, ask for advice and discuss your budget. Call the store and ask what they can do for you. Don’t make the final decision until you know all your options.

If you’re having regrets, leave us a comment – we’ll be glad to help!

There are lots of sweet gift ideas from getting the lyrics of your first dance song made in to a framed print to a piece of jewellery (or a watch for the lads with a ‘don’t be late’ note!) or a case of your favourite white wine complete with ‘Marriage Milestone’ labels so you can celebrate your year of firsts (birthdays, anniversary and all the other gorgeous occasions you have to look forward to).

Table names are one of the best ways to inject a bit of personality in to your wedding and they’re also a great way to work in some fun trivia! Weave in some relationship milestones and stories from the number of the first apartment you shared together and how many pets you own to the number of days since you first met and the place you had your first date.

8. Include your initials in your wedding decor

Celebrate your love story through your decor and to really make the day about you as a couple. Pop some cute initials by the guest book, opt for personalised napkins with a custom monogram or your names and for those that want an extra special toast, you can pick up personalised wine labels in the wedingsonline shop or over on WowWee.ie.

9. Opt for meaningful favours

If you’re going the favour route, there are lots of lovely options that will add to the romance of the day. We love the idea of creating a CD with your favourite love songs for your guests to enjoy or if you’re looking for other cute tokens they can use, think little boxes of mints (or peppermint tea) with ‘Mint to Be labels, a plant with a ‘Let Love Grow’ tag or some match boxes with a cute ‘The Perfect Match’ sleeve.

10. Have a time capsule

The ceremony for a lot of couples is the highlight of the day and if you want to make it even more memorable and have something to look forward to on your anniversary, work a time capsule or love letter ceremony in to your day. Write a letter about how you’re feeling on this amazing occasion, place it in a box with a bottle of your favourite wine and look forward to opening it with your new hubby or wife on an anniversary down the line!

11 Incredibly Cute Ideas for Kids at Weddings

While some couples choose to have an adults only event for their Big Day, others feel the day wouldn’t be complete without their adorable kids or nieces and nephews making themselves known. The kids at weddings debate is one that divides our forums constantly and whatever side you’re on will be the right one for you. If you do opt to have the littlies around for the celebrations, there’s a few things you can do to make sure everything goes smoothly and ensure they have lots of fun too. If you’re looking to make a bit of a fuss of them, pop a kids only sign on their table or cordon off a little play area just for them (the ‘no adults’ allowed sign is genius!). Other adorable ideas we’ve come across include cute place cards and kid-friendly snacks like milk and cookies and their very own party packs to keep them amused. We’re also loving the idea of having some lawn games that both the big kids (ahem adults) and little folk alike can have some fun with. Irish company Giant Party Solutions rent out Giant Jenga, Connect 4 and Buzzwire Challenge which would be a big hit with guests regardless of age and you can also hire out your very own mini crazy golf course courtesy of Irish company Crazy Golf Hire.

If you’re looking to go all out and really treat the guests with kids, one of the best things you can do is hire some entertainment or a professional childminder who can keep the kids busy for a couple of hours. There are several companies that specialise in childcare at weddings – the popular Fun ‘n Frills provide Supervised Portable Activity Areas for children at weddings. They set up in the ballroom so the kids can see you and vice versa and have lots of crafts and games to keep them entertained. FUNtastic Childcare Events also gets rave reviews, have tons of childcare experience and come armed with goody bags to keep the kids happy. Or if you’re after a fun activity to keep them busy during the speeches, magician Magic Carl and his little companion, Mr Fluffy the magic rabbit will amaze them and have them giggling away with his awesome tricks and fun balloon models. Check out more brill ideas below!
